What Are You Listening To This Weekend

Friday! That means it is time for our weekly "what are you listening to this weekend" segment.

I've been toying with the idea of starting a listening group; just like a reading group except with opera recordings instead of books. We'd vote on an opera to listen to, listen to it the following week and then have some discussion over it. Any takers?

Anyhow, as promised, I'll be listening to Pique Dame in my newly landscaped backyard -- alright, partially completed backyard -- FINE, very evenly leveled dirtpatch of a backyard. Happy now?

If I have time I'll delve into Calexico's new album.

But first I need to walk around the dog park with a pair of headphones and a camera because I'm getting low on pictures to use.

I'm listening to John Adams' El Nino this weekend. No, I'm not jumping on the holiday bandwagon just yet. It's been a while and I want to get a little more familiar with it before I get to the newly released Flowering Tree.

Smorg'll play it save and stick with the CDs of Tasmin Little playing Mendelssohn's E-minor violin concerto and Astrid Varnay's Opera Scenes and Orchestral Songs. Cheerio!

We here at Aria Serious are torn by the news that ITV in the UK is filming a new reality series called "Pop Star to Opera Star" where pop stars will tackle the operatic repertoire while being mentored by Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon. While we here at Aria Serious love to see our favorite art form on prime time TV, we're also concerned that this lowers the artistic standard. In a Company that prides itself in attracting the best talent possible, do shows like this undermine our work or is it a much needed breath of fresh air? One thing the show has going for it - Meatloaf (the singer, not the leftovers in your fridge) will be a judge. You can read about it here .
