Meet our Marschallin, Twyla Robinson

As we announced last week, we have a new Marschallin, the wonderful (and delightful) Twyla Robinson. Twyla came into town last week and during her busy rehearsal schedule sat down to record this short podcast with us.

Thank you so much for this wonderful podcast. I only wish that it had been a video interview. As the Cincinnati opera's photo gallery of its Meistersinger shows, Twyla was the definitive embodiment of Eva, the first American singer I've ever heard to give Eva the youthful qualities, in voice and appearance, that the role requires:

Twyla has such a soft, charming speaking voice -- as beautiful, in its own way, as her singing voice.

I actually enjoyed the personal, biographical aspects of the interview most of all. To think -- we almost lost this voice to "country or gospel." How fortunate that opera stole her heart.

I absolutely love her coinage for her Fach: the "Heldensoubrette." Yes! That's so fitting. That's the term for her voice exactly. It's why her Eva was so spot on. And could anything be better for the Marschallin?

I think it's perfect that the Marschallin will be sung with Twyla's Jugendlich tone. It will reveal a less dusky, more vibrant Marschallin than one usually hears, disclosing the girl that still lives in the heart of the woman. That's how I'm imagining it, anyway.

A cross-country journey to hear the performance would not be out of order. But for those of us who miss it, I hope that San Diego might be able to preserve this staging on video, if at all possible.

We'll be conducting two video interviews next week and should have them up online a few days later.

We will record this opera for broadcast on the radio in May which can be streamed online. I don't have the dates in front of me right now but will post them shortly.

A few weeks ago Dr. Nic shared with us 10 interesting things about Der Rosenkavalier , born out of an agonizing ride in the elevator where we stopped on every floor from the subterranean parking garage to the 18 th floor. Luckily we didn't have to recreate that experience to get 10 interesting facts about Faust ... 1. There is a well-known Christmas carol hidden in Méphistophélès ’ first aria, “Le veau d’or”, often called the “Golden Calf aria”. 2. The best known tune from Faust, Valentin’s aria “ Avant de quitter”, was added in 1864, a couple of years after the premiere of the opera (1859) for performances in London. It was sung in English at those performances and the French version followed later. 3. Although the story of Faust is based on Goethe’s original verse play (1806), it only covers Part I of the poet’s version, avoiding the more philosophical depths of Part II. 4. Pop Star to Opera Star

We here at Aria Serious are torn by the news that ITV in the UK is filming a new reality series called "Pop Star to Opera Star" where pop stars will tackle the operatic repertoire while being mentored by Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon. While we here at Aria Serious love to see our favorite art form on prime time TV, we're also concerned that this lowers the artistic standard. In a Company that prides itself in attracting the best talent possible, do shows like this undermine our work or is it a much needed breath of fresh air? One thing the show has going for it - Meatloaf (the singer, not the leftovers in your fridge) will be a judge. You can read about it here .
