The Met's 2009-2010 Season

The Met announced their upcoming season yesterday and you can read about it here. Of special note however are two roles at the Met which will also be seen here in San Diego.

First up is Piotr Beczala (he just sang Edgardo in the HD broadcast of Lucia and NAILED IT) who will be singing his first Rodolfo at the Met in La boheme. Piotr will sing it here, at San Diego Opera, a few weeks prior to his Met engagements. We have him opposite Anja Harteros. La boheme opens our 2010 season in January.

Lise Lindtrsom was also announced yesterday as The Met's Turandot. She'll be bringing this same role in the awesome David Hockney production to San Diego Opera to open the 2011 season.

I was at the Met for the "Lucia" matinee and not only did Beczala nail the role, I am convinced that his calm and confident demeanor steadied the rest of the cast and was the major reason for the strong performance.

And I love the title of your blog.

A few weeks ago Dr. Nic shared with us 10 interesting things about Der Rosenkavalier , born out of an agonizing ride in the elevator where we stopped on every floor from the subterranean parking garage to the 18 th floor. Pop Star to Opera Star

We here at Aria Serious are torn by the news that ITV in the UK is filming a new reality series called "Pop Star to Opera Star" where pop stars will tackle the operatic repertoire while being mentored by Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon. While we here at Aria Serious love to see our favorite art form on prime time TV, we're also concerned that this lowers the artistic standard. In a Company that prides itself in attracting the best talent possible, do shows like this undermine our work or is it a much needed breath of fresh air? One thing the show has going for it - Meatloaf (the singer, not the leftovers in your fridge) will be a judge. You can read about it here .
